There is no doubt that work ennobles man, but not all jobs are worthy due to the conditions in which they are carried out. Many people find that wasting eight hours a day on something they don't motivate is a necessary price to pay in order to survive.. For sure you will know someone in this situation, who basically does not appreciate.
The concept "I sacrifice myself because it is work" is completely wrong; a job certainly requires moments of commitment, but to define it as a sacrifice in itself is demoralizing and profoundly maladaptive.
Certain environments and currents of thought degrade the concept of work, both because they reduce its importance as regards social prestige and because working hard and well arouses strangeness and distrust..
This is how the wrong atmosphere is created in which some colleagues boycott the commitment of others, worrying more about proving their worth than achieving a good result.
Work as an expression of oneself
At work we want to give our best, but if this is not your case, you may need to rethink what you are doing in a place that you may not want to occupy. Work assignments require responsibility and reflect a part of ourselves. Any job is training in terms of discipline, need, punctuality and collaboration.
If you work on an occasional basis or for survival, make sure that this does not completely take you away from your true passion, even if it is, in fact, another theme. The important thing is to find a place where you can shine without feeling strange or guilty and that you find it as soon as possible so as not to waste energy making you helpless..
When you want to shine, but the environment is not inspiring
You must always adopt a positive attitude or give your best in the activity that takes place, but it is often the working conditions and colleagues that influence any effort for the better or for worse, irremediably.
Cooper and Marshall conducted research to determine which stressors are most likely to affect workers' health, psychological and social well-being.. These scholars have identified 5 main types of stressors at work:
- Stress factors intrinsic to the work itself: the physical conditions (excesses, deficiencies or alterations that present certain physical conditions of the work and which can be negative for the worker, such as noise, temperature, etc.) and the overload in case of too much work or tasks of some difficulty.
- Stressors deriving from certain roles in the organization: role ambiguity, conflict of roles, responsibilities of others, which lead to an always "full" agenda or other factors such as lack of support from management, poor participation in taking of decisions or adaptation to technological changes.
- Stress factors deriving from the company structure and climate: lack of participation in the decision-making process, rigid supervision, lack of autonomy in work, restrictions in behavior and company policy, as well as a sense of alienation from the company organization .
- Extra-corporate stress factors: family or marriage models, personal crises, work mobility, economic factors, conflicts between one's thinking and the company's principles, etc.
Scholars also identify the stress factors that derive from interpersonal relationships within the company, to which we dedicate the following paragraph for the close relationship with job satisfaction, a topic extensively explored by Work Psychology.
Interpersonal factors in the workplace
There are many variables that can affect the work environment, but undoubtedly one of the most important is the relationship with work colleagues. Knowing to go to work finding a positive atmosphere and people who can and want to collaborate in case of difficulty is one of the greatest incentives in the workplace.
In general, there are 3 determining factors that can cause stress at work on an interpersonal level:
- The relationship with superiors: there is a direct association between the lack of consideration and favoritism on the part of the superiors with a feeling of malaise and tension in the workers.
- The relationship with people for whom you are responsible: It is very difficult for a supervisor to demand productivity and, at the same time, to stimulate participation and offer considerable and cordial treatment.
- The relationship with colleagues: the rivalry, the lack of emotional support and the loneliness that are created in certain positions of greater responsibility can trigger severe stress.
As a result, the best thing you can do is help improve the work environment, not only because you now know how influential it is, but also because it can become a key factor in the success or failure of a task. Being in tune with co-workers and assertively making requests is the key to getting the most out of what you do and how you do it..
