Cellulite
Cellulite: What it is and Characteristics
Cellulite is a blemish that affects the subcutaneous fatty tissue. Also known as "orange peel skin" or more correctly as "edemato-fibrosclerotic panniculopathy", it manifests itself as an alteration of the superficial skin regularity of some parts of the body.
Cellulite is predominant in women than in men and follows a predominantly gynoid distribution; recognizes amultifactorial etiology and it can be more or less marked. The elements that predispose to the onset of this imperfection are: individual tendency, hormonal alterations, sedentary lifestyle, unbalanced diet rich in predisposing substances, etc.
Cellulite has a multifactorial mechanism of action, which tends to worsen; it is aalteration of the capillary blood circulation, which - NOT sufficiently supplying the adipose panniculus - is associated with the breakdown of fat cells that pour their own content in the interstitial spaces. Circulatory difficulties and the osmotic power of the molecules poured into the interstices promote the retention of large quantities of water which aesthetically manifests itself with the sadly famous skin "orange peel".
Cellulite can be effectively combated ONLY if, among the causes, they predominantly stand out variables on which it is possible to intervene, namely diet and physical activity. As for the individual predispositionobviously, the room for improvement is always extremely limited; while in the case of significant hormonal alterations often (but not always) a therapy aimed at restoring the axis can give satisfactory results.
Diet for Cellulite
Fundamental Principles of the Anti-Cellulite Diet
The cellulite diet makes use of some fundamental principles; let's analyze them one at a time:
- Correct energy intake: in the event that cellulite is accompanied by overweight, it would be a good idea to consume more energy than is introduced with food, in order to restore the physiological weight; on the contrary, if the body mass index indicates full health, the caloric amount of the diet for cellulite must be NORMAL.
- Physical activity association: motor activity is the winning weapon to restore optimal circulation in all body districts. In the first place "it would be" necessary to avoid spending many hours in a sitting or upright and immobile position (unfortunately, often imposed by work and school commitments); if it is not possible to change this aspect, it is advisable to counteract water stagnation daily by: physical motor activity (even mild) and / or the use of drained techniques (positioning the legs up, draining massages, hot-cold bath, etc.) . If the lifestyle is sufficiently active and there is no need to intervene on the circulation of the legs, physical motor activity can be limited to 2-4 weekly sessions lasting about 60 ', in which aerobic and anaerobic activities will be practiced.
- Nutritional balance: the diet for cellulite is a balanced and well distributed diet, therefore, from the nutritional point of view and the division of meals it is comparable to any Mediterranean diet.
- Supply of water, mineral salts and antioxidants: generally we recommend a total water intake (food water + water drunk) equal to 1 ml every kcal introduced, even if a slight increase with a preference for liquids with a low sodium content could prove useful. The mineral salts most useful in the diet for cellulite are mainly the potassium and magnesium, as they facilitate the maintaining a good PRAL (blood pH balance); on the contrary, sodium chloride (table salt, also present in many preserved foods) should be excluded since it tends to favor interstitial water retention. The molecules useful to fight cellulite are mainly the antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E, zinc, selenium, phenolic substances, chlorophyll etc.), respectively contained in raw vegetables and fresh fruit. Other phytotherapeutic molecules useful for microcirculation are contained in: blueberry, sweet clover, centella, butcher's broom, birch, red vine and horse chestnut. Furthermore, it would be a good idea to use some "diuretic" foods such as: artichoke, fennel, endive, chicory, cucumbers, pineapple, melon, watermelon, peaches and strawberries. Some of the products mentioned can be used in the formulation of herbal teas and decoctions (read the article: Tisane against cellulite), which in turn can become an ingredient in anti-cellulite recipes (see for example anti-cellulite ice cream, anti-cellulite risotto, anti-cellulite desserts).
- Elimination of counterproductive molecules: in addition to the added sodium chloride, other counterproductive molecules in the fight against cellulite are: added sugars (and the foods that contain them), caffeine (in excessive doses) and above all ethyl alcohol.
Useful Supplements
Food Supplements Useful in the Diet for Cellulite
The supplements useful in the diet for cellulite are mainly those that contain the molecules already mentioned. On a theoretical level, it should NOT be necessary to use any product since, assuming a balanced diet (except for potassium, which is essential in case of heavy sweating), all the other nutrients should already be supplied in satisfactory quantities.
