How to reach happiness: the two sides of the mountain

How to achieve happiness: the two possible ways

In one village lived a young man who had only one desire since he was a child: achieve happiness.

When he was little he thought that happiness was a city, but he soon realized that this was not quite how things were.

He knew that happiness was an inner state, but there was no way he seemed to be able to reach it, so he really set out on a journey in search of advice.

After months of walking, in the huts of a village at the foot of a large mountain, he met an elder who revealed to him that he knew the way to reach the goal he so desired.

"Will you show it to me?" asked the hopeful but also cautious young man, anyone could have deceived him. “On one condition,” the elder said.

He wanted the young man to escort him to his cottage, little hut on top of that mountain. The reason was that he was old and fatigued and needed a strong young man to help him.

The young man took a night's time, asked around for advice and once he was sure that the man was reliable, he gladly accepted, thinking that he would finally find what he was looking for.

Very early the next morning, before the sun rose, they set out.

After a few hours of travel they reached a camp of merchants, who traded in silk.

The old man invited the boy to stop with them for a few hours and after a long discussion a merchant offered him to bring some goods to one of his customers that they would find on the road.

The elder did not object, the young man took goods and money and completed the assignment.

He had never had so much money and when the customer offered even more for another delivery, with the consent of the elder, the young man resumed his journey and completed this assignment as well.

The two stayed at the camp for six months and every day the young man traveled and delivered goods to neighboring villages, getting richer and richer.

One evening, returning tired from a tiring journey, he found the house all dirty and in disorder, so he lost his patience cursing the woman who took care of the cleaning.

But she was nowhere. Having found the old man, the young man asked him, visibly angry, where the woman was.

"I fired her two days ago," he replied calmly, as the boy was really about to lose his temper.

“I'm tired of travel, I earn enough to live rich and you fire her? What jumps into your mind! " he said raising his voice, for the first time, I count the man.

The elder smiled and showed him a mirror.

The young man saw her face tired and fatigued, red with anger, eyes burning like coals.

At that moment he put his hands on his face and collapsed to the ground.

He would have liked to apologize to the man, but he had no way. The elder told him that the next day they would resume their journey, the house was still far away.

And so it was.

After a few weeks of walking they came to a new village.

They did not speak to anyone about the wealth they possessed, but the boy allowed himself every comfort and one evening I met a girl with black eyes as he had never seen them and fell in love with her.

They lived as husband and wife in the house he had bought, the elder said nothing.

Months went by and she became pregnant, gave birth to a girl and four years passed before a night that changed the course of events.

It was yet another quarrel between the two young men, and the little girl cried hearing their screams. Certain behaviors of hers did not suit her, while he believed that she accepted the attentions of overly presumptuous young people.

For months they had often argued, and many times she ended the evening crying under the moon, while he remained angry on the sofa to let off some steam.

That night, however, after the young woman had left their home to breathe fresh air, the elder offered the mirror to the young man and saw himself exactly as a few years before: tired and tried.

As if he had gone back in time, he collapsed to the floor and cried.

The next morning the young man greeted the woman and her daughter, among their tears, and resumed the journey with the old man to his home on top of the mountain.

They walked for a month and slowly the young man regained his energy, leaving the woman's memories for the return.

During one night when they were camped, however, they were awakened by disturbing noises and found themselves surrounded by a group of brigands.

They beat them and took from them all the wealth that the young man had accumulated for years, the objects, the fabrics and the donkey with which they were climbing to the top of the mountain.

The dawn sun wakes the two unfortunates. The young man sat in silence all day sitting against the rock face of path a cry and complain.

The elder slept.

The next morning he woke the boy up early and forced him to follow him to a puddle to wash his face, and he did mirror.

The young man saw a face tired, gloomy and distressed, and wept again, slumped on the ground. So they resumed the journey in total silence.

As they went up, the young man could no longer resist: "Didn't you have to show me the way to achieve happiness?" he asked the old man sarcastically.

The latter went on in silence.

A few months passed and finally the two arrived at the old man's hut: four wooden walls, crumbling and little or nothing inside.

The young man smiled bitterly, thinking that the journey had been a waste of time.

But the next morning, instead of returning to the valley as he wished, he found himself forced to stay on top of the mountain blocked by the onset of winter, snow.

Everything around the hut was covered with meters of snow and it was impossible to go down to the valley. They were there, isolated.

"When will we get stuck?" he asked the old man nervously. “Winter will last various meals, only in spring it will be possible to go down, if you help me, let's look for something to eat right away! ”.

For months the young man procured firewood in the woods near the hut, and went barefoot to fetch water from a nearby spring in the snow. He gathered berries and hunted some animals as best he could.

At first it all seems so crazy, but despite the total absence of comfort, the old man's constant good humor calmed the young man who was starting to get used to that life.

One day he fell from a tree trying to protect a nest of motherless birds. He took them into the house and shared the food with them.

In the morning, every day, he got up at dawn and admired the spectacle of the sun's rays breaking on the snow creating a thousand rainbows.

Even the rain that filtered through the battered roof had become commonplace and was a good alternative to the long walk to the source, especially on mornings when there was more snow.

One evening he saw the old man's mirror, he had never noticed it and thought that the brigands had taken it many months ago, he went over and looked at himself.

His gaze was serene, peaceful, eyes alive and relaxed.

For months he had lived a life without comfort, money, little food and in total isolation. Yet for the first time he did not cry looking at himself, but laughed with joy.

"To achieve happiness" the old man surprised him by frightening him, "you had to get to the top of the world, it seems", he concluded with a smile.

"You had a lot of money, considered indispensable by everyone, but you were not happy" continued the elder, observing the young man.

“Then you had the love of a woman and the joy of a child, but you were too busy pretending that they loved you the way you wanted.

You have lost all wealth, suffered from hunger and cold, and only when you realized that the sun creates wonderful rainbows in the snow on top of a lonely mountain, did you discover how to achieve happiness! ".

The young man smiled, and asked: "Should I stay?". "Oh no," the elder hastened to reply.

"You don't have to ask.

In a hut like mine, in an inhospitable place, you don't expect anything and if you see the sun, a landscape or a nest of birds, welcome this with joy.

And then you have to love: you almost broke your leg to save a nest, would you have done it a few years ago while you were running like crazy to deliver fabrics all absorbed in amassing money? ".

The young man smiled.

“That woman loves you, but do you love her?

Or do you ask her to love you, do you expect her to satisfy you and change for you? "

The young man remained silent.

"Give her what you gave to that nest: all without expecting anything. Or did you expect the birds you raised to come back to you when they learned to fly? ”.

The young man was impressed.

"Certainly not" he replied, "I knew they would turn away, I just wanted them to be happy, that's all."

"Here is the secret to achieving happiness" concluded the man, accompanying the young man to the window and showing the path that led to the valley clear of snow.

"Do not expect anything from anyone, welcome what life offers you, be it the blows of a brigand, the sun or the love of a woman.

And then love, as you loved that nest, without expecting the one you love to fly for you, but make his own way and be happy".

The young man smiled as he greeted the old man, and a tear fell on his face.

He dried it quickly but the man added: "Crying with joy is a good reason to water the earth beneath your feet with love".

He smiled and dismissed the young man who resumed the path.

He no longer had to reach happiness, he understood well as a child: it is not a long one but it is inside us, and now he understood that it does not depend on anything but him.

Accept everything with joy, he felt resonate in his mind, and love without asking that the one you love fly for you.
