Love makes you generous

Love makes you generous We all know that love can do wonders, even if it sometimes takes us to a stage very close to insanity as we lose most of our critical skills, as you can read in my previous article: “Why is love blind? ". But in addition to these effects (nefarious or adorable depending on the perspective with which they are analyzed), new research shows us that love makes men even more generous and available. The experiment was carried out by the University of Southern Brittany, although the experimental site was implemented in a crowded French street. Young men and women were chosen at random as they strolled down the street, and were asked if they could answer some questions for two different newspapers: Amore e Sentimento ”and“ Secolo XXI ”(false, of course). Both men and women were in turn divided into two groups. Thus, an experimenter asked group A made up of men and women to remember an episode of love, full of romance, and to remember what emotions it reminded them of. People in group B were asked to remember a piece of music that made a particular sense to them and to express their emotions. Having finished this task, they thanked them and let them continue their journey. Obviously, a second group of researchers were prepared to approach these people and ask them if they had any coins to exchange for a banknote, so that they could buy a bus ticket. Evidently, the people subjected to the experiment did not know that whoever approached them was part of a group of researchers. The questions that were asked of them were aimed at acting as a priming. What were the results? The group of men who were asked to remember a romantic event of the past were more generous and lovable in offering the change in currency to the people who asked for it. 38% accepted the request positively. But, the men who were asked to remember a piece of music were less willing, only 13% offered the requested change. We emphasize that in both cases the men were more willing to offer the change when it was requested of them by women. But… what happened to the women? In both groups the answers to the help question were fairly balanced, regardless of the initial priming. 23% of the women who remembered the piece of music offered the change in currency while the 27% who remembered a romantic situation showed themselves equally willing. It is quite curious the substantial difference in the behavior of the two sexes, men were less available than women when they were made to remember the piece of music, while they were much more generous when they remembered an episode of love. Why? Researchers do not offer a definitive answer even if they hypothesize that the differences may be due to culturally determined behaviors in the two sexes; the man has the cultural role of "savior" of the woman, so remembering a sensitive episode on a romantic level makes him more available to offer his help to others, especially when it comes to women.
