Because we never reach the desired change and the secret of true breakthroughs.
"If not now, when? If not me, who? If not here, where? "
Rabbi Hillel.
Often to change our lives we wait for them all conditions are perfect. We often wait to change our lives the right moment. Often to change our life we wait for that life changes for us, in short ... we await the turning point.
This attitude is the fertile ground for excuses, procrastination and demotivation.
Keep telling yourself that you will change your life when: you will have more money, you will be in better shape, you will have overcome this moment, etc. it's like trying to put out a fire by checking the weather forecast.
The truth is, there is no better time than now, fairer person than te and more suitable place than here .
Yes Andre ... nice words! But I'm bogged down! No matter how hard I try, nothing ever changes, on the contrary: the more I commit myself, the more life seems to rage against me. What do I have to do ?!
Same actions, same results
"A problem cannot be solved with the same kind of thinking that generated it."
A. Einstein.
Do you know what's dumber than doing nothing to change your life ?! Repeat the same mistakes expecting different results.
We are eagerly waiting for things to finally start to turn right, assuming that this depends exclusively on external factors over which we have no control. This belief is so ingrained in us that we fail to notice a simple truth. If things don't change it's because:
- We are not doing nothing.
- We are making things (mistakes) of always.
This awareness is the basis of any change. Only when you wipe out all the excuses that choke your mind and have a clear awareness of being 100% responsible of your life, you can be the architect of your turning point.
Mih… is it that easy ?! And couldn't you have told me before Andre ?!
No, unfortunately, it's not that simple: awareness is only the first step of change. Dozens of Hollywood films have deluded us that the protagonist of the moment, including the need for change, achieves success after a short period of training generally accompanied by a nice motivating jingle.
Well, in real life, twists and turns are never so striking, simple and straightforward; but above all there is never a good soundtrack, indeed, lasting and permanent changes are actually carried out… silent.
The silent turn
In the common imagination, noteworthy changes always occur from evening to morning and always have something striking: think of infomercials in which fitness products or miraculous diets are advertised; there are always some beautiful “Before and After” images… and generally before the witnesses were in the toilets of the Autogrill and then they miraculously become Victoria's Secret models.
In my experience the real twists are a bit different:
- as mentioned, first of all comes the awareness.
- awareness followsurgency for change.
- only if the motivations are strong enough does the real work of change. This is generally a dirty job: it never gives us the expected results and the times always seem longer than expected. Clashing with reality generates a lack of motivation and frustration.
- Being able to not give up during this period and having faith in the path that has been undertaken are the real ingredients of success in these moments.
- in the end indeed comes one day (and I assure you it arrives), in which we look back: it is still us, yet everything has changed. What seemed impossible to us is part of our life. What seemed far away is now behind us. We were able to create the breakthrough we were waiting for.
- We can't quite understand what the moment was everything changed. It is true, there have been moments in which we have made different decisions than usual, moments in which we have leveraged our self-discipline, but the truth is that the turning point has been silent, but inexorable.
If your changes also resemble the ones I just described, why are you still waiting for the turning point? What do you think? Is it time to be the architect of your breakthrough?
